Modern Portland cement is a
very finely ground material, which makes it very hygroscopic, meaning that it
not only absorbs moisture in the form of water, but it also absorbs moisture
from the air. Therefore, it is essential to protect it from moisture before
use, if used to accomplish its intended function. A small reaction of the
cement with the moisture results in lumps in the cement bag. As a general rule,
no one wants to use defective material, so a cement bag will fit. A cement bag
with lumps inside will not provide the desired strength of concrete
construction in the future. Not only moisture but also cement should be
protected from rain, direct sunlight, waste, predation etc. To learn more, read
the effect of moisture on the cement bag.
To protect the cement, it
should be stored well in the cement godown. Proper arrangements should be made
in the cement godown to ensure good condition for storage of cement for
construction projects.
STORAGE OF CEMENT
Here are some basic things to
keep in mind when storing cement in a warehouse or godown.
To Save the Cement from
the Moisture Effect
It has been found that cement
retains its quality if moisture is removed from the cement. Absorption of 1 to
2% moisture does not significantly affect the quality of the cement. But if the
moisture absorption exceeds 5%, the cement will become completely useless.
Therefore the cement should be stored in such a way that it does not allow
moisture or humidity to reach the cement from the floor or the environment.
This is especially important during the humid season and when there is a high
level of humidity in the atmospheric air in coastal areas.
(a) Raised Floor to Protect the Cement
from the Ground Moisture:
The
perfect way to store cement
Undoubtedly, there will always be moisture in the ground
soil. When you store the cement bag on the floor without any arrangement on the
floor, the cement bag will absorb moisture from the floor. This can cause lumps
to form in the cement bag. Therefore cement bags should be stacked 150 mm to
200 mm from the floor on a platform made of wooden planks and boards or other
means. Cover the bottom of the platform with an immovable plastic sheet.
(b) Keep Distance from Side Wall to
Protect the Cement from the Atmospheric Moisture:

An important factor to consider during storage is keeping a a safe distance from the sidewalls, ensuring the insulation of cement bags from
leaking and wet walls, especially if the walls are exposed to the outside
atmosphere.
A gap of at least 600 mm should be left between the exterior
walls and the cement stackes.

of Cement Bags in Cement Godown
Proper Stacking of Cement Bags in Cement Godown
It is convenient for stacking and removing cement bags, and it leaves ample space for moving and inspecting bags for counting purposes.
Provide a 600mm space for easy access between individual
piles.
Cement bags should be stacked gradually on a wooden plank
so that the plank is stable and does not topple / overload on one side.
In stackes, cement bags are placed close together to
minimize air circulation as much as possible. Cement is a hygroscopic material.
Atmospheric air contains high levels of moisture. Moisture is the first and
greatest enemy of cement. Cement has moisture-absorbing properties; Therefore,
it should be stored so that moisture does not reach it. Cement is formed in the
form of lumps when moisture occurs close to the cement. Therefore such cement
where the initial structure took place cannot be used for any construction
purpose.
