Water
is essential for many types of household works such as cleaning, cooking,
washing and drinking. This water is stored in overhead tanks or underground
tanks and sump of that particular structure.
The
water storage built into the rooftop is called the overhead water tank. These
tanks are designed to meet the water needs of the building's occupants.
TYPES OF OVERHEAD
TANKS USED IN HOUSES
1. Based On Shape
·
Rectangular
·
Circular
·
Intze
·
Spherical bottom
·
Domed bottom
·
Conical bottom
2. Based On Position
·
Tanks resisting on
ground
·
Underground water
tanks
·
Elevated water tanks
3. Based On Material Used
·
R.C.C.
·
Plastic (PVC)
·
Fibreglass
·
Steel
·
Masonry
From the above categories,
R.C.C. And P.V.C plastics are mainly used. The choice of the tank depends on the
requirements, project cost, site conditions, site location, number of users and
water capacity to be reached.
RCC TANK
1.
It is the composition of Reinforcement
bars concrete
2.
Often rectangular
tanks are built and preferred
3.
Suitable for all
types of buildings
4.
The temperature of
the water inside the tank is maintained
5.
More storage
capacity in circular shape than in rectangular shape
6.
Strength and
durability are high compared to plastic tanks
7.
The construction of
a rectangular tank is more difficult than a circular tank
8.
When building a
rectangular tank, the long side should not be less than twice as long
9.
RCC Tanks Fire
Prevention
10.
Can't change easily
11.
After construction,
they must be adequately cured to avoid water absorption and then allowed to be
used.
12.
Cracks can form in
the structure (crack 0.1 mm width is acceptable)
13.
Waterproofing is
essential to prevent leakage
PLASTIC TANK
1.
Contains high
density polyethene material
2.
Lightweight and easy
to install
3.
Can be used
immediately after installation
4.
Available in
rectangular and circular shapes. (Rectangular - home floor storage, circular -
roof storage)
5.
Available in a
variety of colours (black, blue, brown, white)
6.
Leak control does
not require special treatment until it is damaged
7.
Since the material
is plastic, it is not prone to rust
8.
The cost is low
compared to RCC tanks
9.
UV stabilized tanks
should be preferred
10.
Water can become
foul-smelling if not cleaned from time to time. Furthermore, the chemical
reaction may take place
11.
Water temperature is
not maintained in hot weather
12.
In natural
disasters, they have low resistance to wind loads and can be easily removed
from its original location
VASTU LOCATION FOR WATER TANK
According to
Vastu-shastra, the correct position of the overhead water tank should be in the
south or south-west corner, which is for the better life and prosperity of the
family members.
Avoid setting up
overhead tanks in a northerly or northeast corner. This is a very unsuitable
corner for water storage.
WATER LEAK CONTROL
In the case of RCC
tanks, the inner surfaces should be covered with waterproof material. The chemical compound can be used with cement for penetration Physical agents such as fine
particles can be added to concrete to control crack growth. IS code 2645-2003
should be specified for the construction and waterproofing of water tanks.
For plastic tanks,
sealing material should be applied to all joints from pipe to tank. Can be
repaired by using a crack seal material up to 6 inches. Rubber can be applied
around the pipe joints.
ADDITIONAL SITE FOR OVERHEAD TANKS
At the top of the
roof, the terrace can provide an elevated base to avoid direct contact between
the rainwater and the water tank base. Can provide a platform of at least 6
inches. It can be built of metal, wood, concrete or brick.
